Depave: Legal Urban Rewilding!

A couple of weeks ago I helped a group of people dismantle an asphalt blacktop at a school, using crowbars and sledge hammers. It felt fantastic! No, we didn’t do it during the middle of the night and no the cops did not stop us. Depave works to (legally) free the soil and replant it with community gardens. Click the pic and read more about it at their website:

  1. Hey- good for you! Doing well in sf, and have been catching up on your blogs… won’t have much time to do so when school starts..

  2. Depave:? This is the best thing one may do if one sees that ugly, horrible stuff!

Another great way of bring down some ultra crappy man made civ.

Wildflowers, trees, and who knows what else… will return.

    Yahoo!!!!!

  3. Hey there Urban Scout,
How fantastic to remove suffocating tar from the earth.

Out of curiosity – is the soil considered clean to plant edible plants/veggies, etc? I wonder how how hot heat leaches residue.

Just recently, around NE 155th ave – at some small elementary school – I saw a cute little patch of a garden – that surprised me considering the neighborhood around here.

Hope the Depave idea spreads to ALL schools – 😀
